2015 Fall Greens aerification
This years fall aerification for greens was a great success removing thatch produced over the summer and getting the much needed oxygen into the soil profile to the turfgrass root system. Topdressing was applied and dragged into the holes.
Organic fertilizer, along with gypsum-potassium and magnesium were applied following the topdressing process.
Next week we will verticut the green parameter, over seed and apply topdressing again to fill the remaining aerification holes left from the previous week.

Cicada killer damage
The cicada killer Sphecius speciosus wasps are solitary wasps that borrow tunnels in well drained soils with full sun light in areas near trees that harbor cicadas. Over time they build large aggregations. It is estimated that 40% of developing larvae may emerge the following year (12 or more per tunnel).
The females have significant stingers which injects venom and paralyzes the insect. the cicada is then carried into the tunnel where the wasp places it's eggs inside the cicada which is then used for food for the larvae. The Sphecius speciosus are not aggressive and are not nest protectors. You can walk through areas that are active without fear of being attacked. However if provoked the females can sting and will be quite painful.
To control the insect, we pour water into the hole covering it immediately after water is applied which flushes out the wasp. Once the wasp is flushed out of the hole it is caught in the cup used to cover the hole with and then exterminated using no chemicals at all for control.
They are very active on the eleventh green and have caused damage worthy of controlling the insect and plugging the green.
